Complete Course Description:

-Basics: The nomenclature of a line, a couple simple effective bends and loops, and methods to store line

  1. Running end, body, standing end, over and underhand loops, turns, wraps, bight, and tail
  2. Preparing line for effective use: cutting to appropriate lengths and burning the ends so they are streamlined
  3. Two different bends and how to untie them easily
  4. Learn differences between a running loop and slip loop and how to utilize them for different purposes
  5. Two different ways to tie the “king of all knots” the Bowline and the trick to untie it easily
  6. Two methods to store your line so it can be used quickly in emergencies

-Knots for Shelter: Several knots that are simple, fast, and effective to tie out emergency material shelters

  1. Learn several hitches that can be used to put up and take down a tarp-type shelter quickly
  2. Practice using the knots you’ve learned to build a shelter out of any kind of large material you my have available (emergency blanket, tarp, bed-sheet, poncho, rain gear, garbage bag, etc.)

-Knots for emergency evacuation: Several knots and improvised rope work useful in lowering out of damaged buildings or down cliffs

  1. How to form an improvised harness out of a length of webbing, line, or cloth
  2. Knots to tie various reasonably strong items together to make an improvised rope
  3. Knots and hitches useful in lowering oneself safely to the ground
  4. Hitches useful in easily ascending a rope or passing over knots that might impede progress in either direction

-Lashings: Useful for building just about anything you might need in the back-country

  1. Learn a lashing useful for connecting poles in-line to make tripods for things like drying racks, smokers, A-frame shelters, tables, hanging cooking pots over the fire, etc.
  2. Learn a couple of lashings good for connecting poles perpendicular to each other for building lean-to shelters for winter, platforms in trees for hunting stands or shelters in wet environments, building rafts, making or repairing backpack frames, and more.
